There’s nothing like Valentine’s Day to put the pressure on your relationship!
This international day of love is the chance to express how you really feel, but it’s easy to get things all messed up. This is especially the case if you’re a Valentine’s Day rookie, or if you’ve been in the bad books lately and you’re trying to go straight.
At La La Land, we’re kind of Valentine’s Day junkies. Sure it’s a made-up day, and sure it can be a bit twee, but we’re all for love. So in the spirit of Cupid himself, we’re going to help you aim straight at your paramour’s heart. Here are some simple dos and don’ts for finding the right Valentine’s Day gift and showing that (ridiculously awesome) person you love how much you care.
Do: Make your Valentine’s Day special
No matter what your Valentine’s Day gift is, it has to mean something to you and your partner. By all means book a restaurant, but make it one you have both been wanting to check out for months, or a place where you had one of your first dates.
And remember: Hundreds of dollars doesn’t always equal a great present. Instead, think of something your partner truly loves and find something to reflect that on Valentine's Day. A gorgeous scarf for a snappy dresser or a hard-to-find vinyl record for a music buff are the types of Valentine’s Day gift that show you’ve been listening and learning throughout your relationship.
Don’t: Shop for your Valentine’s Day gift at the last minute
Those supermarket flowers say a lot, and unfortunately “I love you” is not at the top of the list. Shopping at the last minute means all the good gifts have gone and you won’t have time to think of something that really reflects your relationship once Valentine's Day rolls around.
Your Valentine will know if you have grabbed a chintzy card from the service station. Plan ahead and find a romantic, sweet or funny Valentine’s card that shows you have put in some time and effort.
On Valentine’s Day, it pays to plan ahead. If you’re ordering something online, make sure you have plenty of time for it to arrive in the mail.
It is also important to book in advance, even if you are heading somewhere as simple as the movies. You don’t want to be left in the cheap seats while other couples enjoy the latest rom-com with their feet up in Gold Class.
Do: Be creative with Valentine’s Day and have fun
Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to have some fun with your partner, especially if you have been together for a while.
Some outside-the-square Valentine’s Day Gift ideas include:
- Choose a theme (like the colour red) and give them a selection of gifts that match the theme
- Put together a treasure hunt with clues and a ‘prize’ at the end
- Create a restaurant-at-home complete with champagne, candles and hand-made desserts
- Contact your partner’s boss and book them a day off work as a surprise
- Set up a movie night with a Hollywood classic, champers and cushions on the floor
- Give them one gift representing every year you have been together
Don’t: Go for the same old tacky Valentine’s Day stuff
Chocolates, roses, fluffy white bears… these are gifts you might get away with on your first Valentine’s Day. In the years that follow they start to feel like the lazy option.
Expand on the basics with chocolate covered strawberries, a bunch of your true love’s favourite blooms or a half hour, candlelight massage.
More sweet ideas for Valentine's Day include:
- Personalised heart-shaped candies
- A fruit bouquet
- A pretty clutch or tote bag with some treats or a message of love inside
- A piece of jewellery in their favourite colour
- A quality scented candle
- An individual sized red velvet cake
Do: Make it from the heart
The simplest way to nail Valentine’s Day is not through gifts themselves, but by saying what you mean.
You can choose a romantic card, a silly or a pun-tastic one, but once your lover has seen the cover, it’s the message inside that will truly show them you care.
Write something heartfelt, or if this is not your forte, find a quote or poem about love online that reflects the way you feel this Valentine's Day.
